Altar Servers are members of the parish who assist the priest at Mass. Altar serving is a quiet but very important part of the Mass.
During Mass, Altar Servers do the following:
Carries the Processional Cross and candles at the beginning of Mass
Assists in the Opening Prayer by holding the Missal so that the priest's hands are free
Prepares the Altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the Chalice and Missal, small cruet with water
Helps the priest receive the gifts of bread and wine
Provides the bowl, water and towel for the priest to cleanse his hands
Clears the Altar after Communion
Assists in the Closing Prayer by holding the Missal so that the priest's hands are free
Carries the Processional Cross and candles at the end of Mass
Must have received 1st Communion
Must attend a training session
