Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are lay people who receive spiritual, theological and practical preparation to fulfill their role to distribute Communion with knowledge and reverence. Your willingness to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion reflects not only a response to your Baptismal call to serve the people of God, but also as a commitment to Christ as you share in the preaching, teaching and leading aspects of the church. You offer the Eucharist, recognizing the Body of Christ in those to whom you offer it and ultimately act as part of the Body of Christ by fully participating in the life of the Church.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion help feed the children of God with the Body and Blood of Christ. All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.
Extraordinary Ministers always serve at the discretion of the priest. He decides if the requirements for the use of Extraordinary Ministers are present and how many will be needed. Some also deliver communion to parishioners who are in the hospital, nursing homes or homebound and cannot attend Mass.
